Agave Dream Reposado (Tequila)

Agave · Fresh agave · Mexico · Oak · Tequila · Vanilla

A rested tequila combining evident agave with an initial layer of barrel character. It often occupies a useful teaching position between an unaged expression and a more extensively matured one, without being a compulsory midpoint in flavour intensity.

Color

Commonly pale gold to amber, with clear presentation.

Maturation

reposado (at least two months in oak); actual time and barrel history should be recorded when known.

Alcohol

Mexico 35–55% ABV; ordinary U.S. tequila at least 40%; the cited example is 40%.

Sweetness

Usually dry to softly sweet-seeming; no universal sugar level.

Balance

Medium to pronounced; cooked agave, gentle wood and fruit-like detail.

History

The history of 100% agave reposado combines two developments: recognition of wood-rested tequila and formal differentiation by fermentation source. Mexico’s 1976 standard established the two raw-material categories. This is a firmer historical marker for the modern label than assigning every 100% agave reposado to one producer’s claimed invention; the underlying maturation practice belongs to tequila’s shared history. Classic characteristics

Appearance

Commonly pale gold to amber, with clear presentation.

Aroma

Medium or greater; agave alongside restrained oak and vanilla.

Flavor

Medium to pronounced; cooked agave, gentle wood and fruit-like detail.

Sweetness

Usually dry to softly sweet-seeming; no universal sugar level.

Mouthfeel

Rounded but not necessarily heavy; warmth and light drying wood may follow.

Finish

Usually medium, sometimes longer; agave and wood should be described separately.

Flavor Profile Deep Dive

Assess the meeting of agave and early wood influence; a pale reposado can be fully appropriate. Investigate persistent solvent-like pungency, unpleasant stale character or wood astringency that overwhelms the intended expression. A descriptor alone cannot prove a distillation-cut error, additive use or chemical safety.

Service notes

Build a short progression using a producer's blanco, reposado and añejo. Ask tasters to follow agave intensity independently of oak intensity, since the two do not have to move in opposite directions. For a guest, “agave with a touch of barrel character” is a starting explanation, followed by the actual bottle's distinguishing note. In a cocktail comparison, keep other ingredients constant initially; then discuss whether the reposado benefits from changing sweetness or garnish.

Style comparison

Relative to blanco, look for what maturation contributes rather than assuming that every difference came from the cask. Different distillates or blends may also be involved. Relative to añejo, the most reliable distinction is the verified category; sensory overlap is legitimate. A darker reposado does not automatically outrank a pale one in age or quality.

Production notes

The 100% agave category and reposado (at least two months in oak) class apply. A producer may use different barrel types or blend rested components to reach its intended profile. The word reposado provides a maturation classification, not a complete account of how the bottle was made.
